Lancelot Blondeel – Abstract Painter and Contemporary Artist

Intro motion image

An engineer turned artist___

Lancelot Blondeel is a contemporary painter born in 1988. Trained as an engineer, he currently works in Fontenay-sous-Bois, near Paris.

The artist develops a gestural approach, conceiving painting in relation to movement. Through the body, the painter forms a memory of gesture, leaving on the surface imprints and furrows. These singular traces are revealed through the combination of complementary materials: transparent matter, paper, or cotton canvas.

Granting an important role to the circulation of light through his works, the artist questions the way reality presents itself, exploring the mechanics of the senses and perception. He draws the viewer into a reflexive position questioning our modes of presence in the world..

Luminotype

Vibrations of striking presence___

The series Luminotype mark by using a medium to paint little used: transparent canvas. This specific material allows light rays to circulate; they pass through fields of colour, reflect and diffuse.

The association of transparent canvas with acrylic paint, whose translucency properties are exploited, generates vibrations of notable presence.

The Ultramarine blue pigment, the keystone of the series, is thus revealed in in its full strength and character….

A flux of solar particles___

In Solar wind, the artist produces a dual exploration of movement. We find in the background, traced with the help of a wide brush, the trajectory of particles leaving the heliosphere.

In the foreground, we discover an organic form with a dynamic character obtained during a matter of moments.

Here, the artist seeks to the human experience of the instant in tension with the apparent impermanence of celestial bodies

No Reason

A spontaneous movement___

In No Reason, Lancelot Blondeel creates both a groove and a relief by concentrating paint at specific points on the canvas.

This technique marked by curved lines and vivid colors, emphasizes thegestural dimension of his practice.

In doing so, he moves away from the traditional pictorial approach based solely on the additive application of material.

A new narrative___

For Interlaced Landscapes, Lancelot Blondeel developed a specific creative process which follows three main steps.

In the first step, the artist built an abstract space composed of textures or gestural work. Each canvas is then cut on the reverse side, in a random manner, so that the resulting pattern remains unknown. Finally, the canvas is recomposed using the cut strips, producing a new narrative shaped by the artist...

The idea of gravity___

Extending the « Clinamen » series, this group of abstract studies explores the idea of gravity. Working on a wooden surface offers an opportunity to engage with a new material; the experimentation lies in testing the surface’s response in order to reveal its inherent character…

Clinamen

Atoms falling through the void___

The Greek philosopher Epicurus, who conceived Nature as composedof atoms and void introduced the concept of Clinamen Greek, "deviation". He defined it as the random deviation of atoms falling through the void.

By successive shocks, this original decline would give rise to the world as we know it
