Curved lines and vivid colours___
Moving against the traditional pictorial convention of adding matter to create form, Lancelot Blondeel builds relief by concentrating paint at precise points across the canvas. This particular technique foregrounds the gestural dimension of his practice, favouring curved lines and vivid colours.
No Reason: a spontaneous movement traced in a matter of moments___
The preparation of the canvas, as well as the selection of hues, follows a rigorous and planned process. The resulting form, by contrast, is the product of a spontaneous movement traced within moments - the near-instantaneity of the gesture set against the permanence of the canvas.
The two-colour palette is inscribed within a restrained composition. Successive layers of wash reinforce textural effects, creating an impression of depth. The relief is worked to catch shadow and light, emphasising the three-dimensional quality of the surface.
